Contrabando Cafe in Portmarnock offers a cozy, intimate spot for those looking to unwind with a well-crafted coffee or a relaxed bite. Situated inside Strand Centre along Strand Road, this small café blends the vibe of a local coffee shop with the draw of a casual dining experience, especially popular in the evenings.

The café is known locally for its authentic Roman-style pizzas that carry a depth of flavour, making it a go-to for anyone craving a slice more nuanced than your average takeaway. While the pizza prices can be on the higher side — except for their straightforward margherita — the quality justifies the occasional splurge. Complimenting the food, their selection of wines, particularly the white varieties, fits naturally into the mellow evening atmosphere.

Contrabando’s appeal lies not just in food and drink but also in the atmosphere forged by the friendly, approachable staff and the engaging owner, who often chats with customers, adding a personal touch to visits. This makes it a comfortable place to linger, whether seated at the bar with a coffee or a glass of wine or gathered with friends over a meal.

Locals especially appreciate Contrabando for its late opening hours, which is rare for good coffee spots in the area, allowing those finishing a day at the nearby Velvet Strand or out on Strand Road to end their evening here. The ambience is warm and welcoming — not overly polished but perfectly suited to a laid-back catch-up or a quiet solo stop.

Morning visitors can count on fresh and healthy breakfast options alongside excellent coffee, while later hours bring out the café’s bar-like qualities. It is a spot that balances casual, everyday use with a slightly elevated dining experience, suited to people who enjoy quality ingredients in a setting where the staff remembers your name and your favourite drink.

Overall, if you’re in Portmarnock looking for a community-flavoured café that doubles as a pizza place with good wine and a friendly atmosphere, Contrabando delivers a genuinely local experience. Best to visit late afternoon into the evening, whether after a beach walk or a busy day, to soak up its distinct blend of casual and convivial.

Super impressed with the pizzas. Will definitely return. Probably the nicest pizza we've tasted in Ireland. White wine lovely too. Slightly expensive for pizzas other than margarita.

Nine, small cosy place with amazing coffee and it’s opened late! It is so hard to find good coffee places opened late, so this is true gem!

Great authentic romana pizza, bursting with flavour. We talked to the new owner Nico for a while after we had our food, really nice atmosphere in the place now after the name change & new managment. I will definitely be back soon

Best café/bar around by a mile! Such a warm welcoming atmosphere Nico has created, with genuinely kind and friendly staff. We love sitting at the bar with a coffee or glass of wine. Paninis and pizzas are delicious and breakfast options are fresh and healthy. There is no place like it in Dublin

The “Contrabando Café” is a beautiful bar/pub. The service was lovely, and all the staff were extremely nice. My girlfriend and I had the espresso — it was great. If you’re ever in Portmarnock, I definitely recommend trying their espresso.

At Contrabando Café in Portmarnock, friendship feels as warm as the oven that brings their wonderful pizzas to life. Nicola and Selene welcome you with a sincerity that turns a simple visit into a moment of comfort and joy. Their super pizza tastes like tradition and home, each bite full of care and sunshine. The super wines glow like small treasures, each glass deepening conversation and softening the world around you. At Contrabando Café, you don’t just eat. You belong. You laugh, you share, and you leave carrying a little more warmth in your heart than when you arrived.

I visited this lovely café with my friend and it was a wonderful experience. The gentleman and the lady at the counter were incredibly kind and welcoming. Their warm and friendly nature truly added to the charm of the place. I ordered a bruschetta and a latte, and both were absolutely delicious. The bruschetta was fresh and full of flavor, while the latte was perfectly made. It’s always a pleasure to find a place with great food and even better hospitality. I’ll definitely be coming back!
